Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced a snap election for next month, according to the Kyodo news agency on Monday, seeking to take advantage of improved ratings and disarray in his political opposition.

Abe will hold a news conference at 6 p.m. (0900 GMT), Jiji news agency reported.
